Legends Match Honors Club's Greats

Blacksburg Rugby's members past and present got together to pay tribute to the club's two-decades-plus history with a Legends ("Old Boys") match featuring current players alongside several former members of the club.

After introductory comments from coach Perry Pence and longtime club mainstays John Averill and Sean Flynn, participants were divided into a white-shirted side composed primarily of current Blacksburg players against a blue-shirted side featuring the honored guests from the club's history supplemented by some current club members. Club president Lou Madsen generously took the day off as a player to serve as a volunteer referee.

Although the format was informal, the visiting legends showed enough hustle and flair that a casual observer might have found it difficult to sort out the retired visitors from the current players. The informal scoreline tells one tale about the day, but plenty of more important stories were no doubt told at the after-match social event provided by generous support from sponsors London Underground and Pabst Blue Ribbon.

The current crop of Blacksburg players thank the legends who attended to make the event a success:

Scott Bortz

The next legends match is tentatively scheduled for sometime during the Fall 2011 season. In the meantime, the Blacksburg schedule continues a trial match just down the road at Radford University.
