Road Setback for Depleted Blacksburg
Stretched thin by injuries and player unavailability, Blacksburg traveled the long path to Virginia Beach and was handed its first loss of the 2009-2010 season by a 13-5 margin.
Blacksburg made the trip with a run-on side that featured seven changes from the previous weekend's starters, but the traveling group was a strong one despite the numerous enforced changes. Despite a talented and hard-working traveling side, Blacksburg found itself in a tough contest with the hosts from the start. Both sides scored one try, but an impressive Virginia Beach outfit was able to add a conversion and two penalty goals to pick up the win. Some inopportune infractions and inconsistent patterns of play cost Blacksburg dearly, earning the side its first loss in the Virginia Rugby Union Senior Men's DIII competition in more than a year. Prop Joe Amoroso was rapped by coach Chuck Rockwell as man of the match for a strong performance in the set pieces and in the loose.
Blacksburg congratulates Virginia Beach on the win and appreciates the hosts' hospitality. With three matches to go in the season, Blacksburg has a free weekend to lick its wounds, though an exhibition match for the developmental side may be arranged during the time off. Next up after the short holiday is a trip to Richmond to take on James River on 17 October.
